Who We Are
What's In A Name...
Green Light Sanctuary was thus called for several reasons, which are detailed further along within this website. The primary inspiration, though, is most pertinent to our ethos; a sign to move, whichever direction your dharma may demand. The expression of dharma is unique across nature, but just as our souls are of one substance, we are also all called to keep traveling, learning, and balancing through our lives. Green Light is an invitation to exit stagnation and move steadily towards passion, however this manifests, for any individual who finds their way to our space.
Yoga Philosophy Led
philosophy, sustained by community.
To say we are led by yogic philosophy means to embody the Eight Limbs as deeply and as frequently as we can. The studio standards for community members and the teacher guidelines are inspired explicitly by the Yamas and the Niyamas. We have intentionally chosen independent/self-employed talent based in Sheffield to build this project; our logo, our website, our accountant, our mat manufacturers, the products in our boutique, the artists who’ve decorated the studio, and our teachers are all part of our community. Through learning and teaching, we travel the path of Jnana. Through co-creating a free library of yoga resources on our website and offering semi-regular pay-as-you-feel classes, we travel the path of Karma. Through the use of Sanskrit, incorporation of pranayama, and theming around key yogic texts in every class, we travel the path of Bhakti.
Sanctuary Standards
The Yames and the Niyamas in Practice.
Satya
We expect our community to practice Satya (truthfulness) with themselves, our community, and our staff. We wish to build a community where everyone feels comfortable being honest about what their body, mind and soul is seeking, where you can express how you’re really doing when asked, and where boundaries are communicated freely and respected fully.
Ahimsa
We expect our community to practice Ahimsa (non-violence) towards themselves, our community, and our staff. We hold a zero-tolerance policy for racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, ableism, xenophobia, and discrimination or aggressive behavior. We wish to build a community where members are striving to be kind to themselves as well as each other, where we nurture rather than push, and where compassion is the bare minimum.
Asteya
We expect our community to practice Asteya (non-stealing), materially and energetically. We wish to build a community where everyone respects what belongs to our Sanctuary, to others, and to themselves. Time and energy, as well as physical space, is shared mindfully, with attention devoted to your own capacity as well as that of others.
Shaucha
We expect our community to practice Shaucha (cleanliness) with themselves, our community, and our staff. We wish to build a community where everyone values the physical cleanliness of our Sanctuary; removing shoes before entering the Shala, wiping down borrowed mats after use, and taking care with borrowed props. Energetically, we expect our community to participate with kindness, compassion, and non-competitive intentions.
Tapas
We expect our community to pursue Tapas (self-discipline) for the benefit of themselves, our community, and our staff. We wish to build a community where everyone endeavors to arrive 15 minutes before a class or workshop start time, with adequate time to prepare yourself for your practice. In our Shala, you’re welcome to wear whatever you prefer for practice, with the caveat that everyone must wear an upper body covering of some variety, as well as bottoms. We expect cancellations to be made in line with our terms & conditions, except in exceptional circumstances.
We expect Sanctuary Standards to be upheld for the benefit of everyone who makes Green Light such a special space <3
